What type of cat is best for me... ?

There are presently more than 20 breeds of cats, and each group has distinct characteristics. Although every cat will have its own distinct personality, there are certain generalizations that can be made. Persians and other Longhairs can be counted on to be reasonably quiet and decorative. Shorthair breeds range from quite to loud. cuddly to super active. Only if you are willing to put up with the higher energy level should you begin to consider an Abyssinian cat. before deciding on any particular kitten you should take time to analyze your needs and lifestyle. Take the time to research the different personality traits of the breeds and try and find one that will suit you.

Please remember that acquiring a pet is a lifetime commitment and should not be taken lightly.

If you don't have the time to devote to companionship, if you enjoy the freedom to travel without responsibilities, if the animal is simply another unique acquisition, or if you don't have the time or money to give care should it become ill, then don't get a pet.

What type of cat is an Abyssinian ... ?

An Aby, generally speaking is a very people-oriented cat. Not a lap cat but a cat that likes to be with people, a cat that wants to know what you are doing -that wants to help. Abyssinians have been called "Lions of Love", elegant cats, with a gracious carriage, and striking color. They come in four colors : see pictures

Expressive eyes and large, constantly alert ears dominate their almost smiling faces.

The Abyssinian is an active, intelligent cat that loves people. They like to be in high places, such as on top of the refrigerator or a bookshelf. Abyssinians  interact with their owners and often enjoy the company of another cat. Abyssinians need room to romp and play apartments unless very spacious will not work.

Abyssinians do not like to be left alone for long periods they like dogs need companionship and will display frustration and depression if left longer than 8 hours. Loyal and devoted is often used to describe the Abyssinian and they make wonderful companions.

Where did the Abyssinian come from ... ?

Although the Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds, there continues to be speculation and controversy concerning its history. In appearance, Abyssinians resemble the paintings and sculptures of ancient Egyptian cats. The source of the name Abyssinian is not because Ethiopia, formerly Abyssinia, is thought to be the original home of these cats, but because the first " Abyssinian" exhibited at a show in England was reported to have been imported from that country.

English fanciers maintain they originated in England by selective breeding. The truth may lie somewhere in between the two theories. Cats brought back to England from North Africa than breeder-refined with English ticked cats. Even if the Aby is not exactly the cat worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, there is certainly no doubt in the Abys mind that it deserves to be worshipped!

How do I introduce a new cat to another... ?

Have a bedroom or small room ready for the new cat with a potty box, food and water all set up and a climbing tree or at the very least a scratching post. Let the kitten or cat explore undisturbed until it is thoroughly at home there and not frightened when you enter. Let the kitten or cat out to explore the rest of the house after a few days and place the resident cat in the room.

Alternate the cats among the rooms so that they will become familiar with one another's odors. Place a gate or screen in the doorway of the room so your cats can observe each other and get acquainted with out physical contact. When they can peacefully coexist in the same space, take down the barrier. It is a very good idea to have your veterinarian examine the new cat before you bring it home.
